Ancient writers state that the architect of the building was Pytheos, who was also the architect of the Priene Athena Temple. Vitrivius says that the most important sculptors of the period worked in this building in the 4th century BCE. Bryaxis among the Sculptors was in fact from Caria; and he was the one, who sculpted the statues of Mausolus and Artemisia standing on a 4-horse chariot on top of the Mausoleum. The monument survived for 1500 years, but collapsed during the earthquake in 1304. Today, the Mausoleum stays as one of the World’s Seven Wonders of the World.
